I feel rather bad for Tomasi. He's got a damned fine book in Green Lantern Corps, and he's told a pretty good story in this arc. It gets a little bit under the radar, though, because of the inevitable comparison with the other side of the cosmic coin, the main Green Lantern title. Which just happens to written by Geoff Johns and feature, among other things, rage-filled, blood-spewing kittens. You can't compete with that, and trying is like comparing apples and brake pads. If you are able to divorce yourself of the comparison, the Violet Lanterns/Star Sapphires are a far more rounded concept than Atrocitus and his Red Lanterns, and this story realy shows that in what happens between parts one and four. Just think of where we were when the Guardians paid a visit to the Zamaronian homeworld, for the reader was led to feel about the Sapphire Corps then, and how we feel after this part, and seeing how the line is blurred as to whether they are truly an enemy or even a threat. Additionally, you have the repucussions of the 3rd new Law of the Book of Oa, where we see that the GL Corps have been weakened once again in the face of insurrection due to yet more inpet decision-making by the Guardians. You can be sure that anger and finger-pointing will be sure to follow. Of course, for my money, the best part of this issue was the last page, as my jaw dropped with the possibilities of what will happen with Mongul on a planet of xenophobic Supermen. not to mention that the art here is great, and the artist truly excels at constructing creepy alien creatures, such as Kryb. And luckily, Tomasi's GL Corps allows for plenty of those.
