This was a weird issue of Green Lantern Corps. I’m not saying that because there was a fill-in artist, nothing strange about that. No, it was more from a writing stand point that made me puzzled about this. Mainly that: Peter Tomasi is a fantastic writer and I know he can do better then this.

Now this isn’t a bad issue by any means, but something about it just felt off. Was it seeing an alien raptor fight off the bad guys with his tongue? No. Was it seeing Salaak having lips? Strange, but no. I think what made this issue go off the rails was the introduction and pointless end of a new character called ‘Porter’. This guy literally comes from no where, and with a name close to the word ‘portal’ you can guess what his special power is. This guy is a textbook ‘deus ex machina’ and it is clear that Tomasi had no idea how to properly get us from point A to point B in this. Again it is not bad, but I know Tomasi can do better then just bringing in a random character to save the day but quickly getting rid of him. If this guy was introduced in the first issue then this sudden turn makes sense. As it stands, his presence really hampered my enjoyment of the issue.

The art by Geraldo Borges is a pretty decent fill in artist for Pasarin. He is no Pasarin that’s for sure, but never did I really flip through this book and thought it was a rush or bad job. Maybe there isn’t anything remarkable about it either, but he does do a good job mixing up the constructs for the various characters. His Guy Gardner also has the knack of changing facial structure when the time comes.

Just a bizarre issue all around when it comes to the story. Peter Tomasi did a pretty bad job hiding the ‘deus ex machina’ character from being obvious with Lantern Porter. Plus Geraldo Borges’s art is good, but nothing groundbreaking overall. While this issue wasn’t bad by any means, it might certainly be the most forgettable issue of a comic I’ve read in a while. Which definitely isn’t a good sign with only the third issue out.
