I picked this up because I really enjoyed GL #21 by Robert Venditti and I heard he was co-plotting this issue. I enjoyed it as a nice compliment to GL.

If you’ve read “GL Corps: Recharged” some of this may feel familiar. There’s a crisis brewing and the Corps wants YOU! John Stewart is the lead here, with a supporting cast made up of a handful of new and old GLs. We get some context here about why Salaak quit, Kilowog replaced him, and what others were doing when Larfleeze attacked. There’s also some new enemies introduced that I’m looking forward to seeing more of. We don’t get much about the new recruits except for their names and some of their professions. I’d like to see how they handle being GLs in the next issue and hear dialogue from all of them.

Art is decent, there’s a bit of a manga style to Chang’s pencils IMO but it didn’t take away from the story. I get a feeling he may have taken inspiration from Patrick Gleeson but I could be seeing things.

This is a good issue, if you loved GL #21 and want more you’ll probably enjoy this. Venditti’s said that all of the GL books will bleed into each other so this and GL will probably tell different parts of the same story, which I find compelling. This certainly felt like GL with a focus on the background characters.

One quibble, Fatality”s costume. Carol’s got a nice redesign which was more practical but Fatality’s is the same. With new artists and writers coming it, I was sort of hoping we could see new attitudes on female characters and costumes. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but its something I was hoping for. Still a good issue, not a bad debut for a new comer to monthly comics.
