Oh man, this series has really been bugging me lately. It kinda represents my whole thoughts on Brightest Day as a whole. It started of interesting but gradually it has wained on me. This series seemed to be less about Hal Jordan and more about the new Guardians. Now I’m fine with seeing more of these guys; but I’d rather see it in a separate series then in Jordan’s book. It’s funny that in a few months there will be a Green Lantern movie but by that time, this still won’t be a Hal Jordan centric series.

I complain about this only because I want to see Geoff Johns tackle more of Hal Jordan in his own book. Thankfully, I get a lot of that here keeping my interest in the series going for another month. This issue solely focuses on Barry Allen trying to figure out what the hell is going on with Hal. Throughout the issue we get some good characterizations of Hal and his motivations for letting this go to hell for so long. But Johns peppers in some Guardian moments with Larfleeze and the Indigo Lanterns. Instead of making them solely the focus of the issue, he lets them be on the sidelines from the actual story. It would make the series so much better if Johns continued that route. The new aspect of the Indigo lanterns is really intriguing and to keep it a mystery (instead of being it the entire focus of the issue) is good on Johns part.

When an artist does great work month in and month out; I feel bad for not saying much about it. But Doug Mahnke has been killing it with this series for so long that it’s hard to find much to talk about. It’s the one saving grace (before this issue mind you) of this series since Blackest Night ended. The Indigo’s Entity though is a bit creepy, and I’m not sure if Mahnke had a good handle on what the thing had to look like. Still though, it’s a pretty good looking issue as always.

With this issue I was really prepaired to drop it. But thankfully Geoff Johns finally brings the focus on Hal Jordan and I was pretty interested in his mindset since Blackest Night. If he continues to write issues like this and also put the Guardians in the background; then I would enjoy this series so much more. As it is though it was a well written issue and the art was fantastic as always.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
