This would have been so much better if it weren’t so heavy handed. There’s a lot to plumb in the idea of the will power it takes to maintain any semblance of dignity in the face of racism and prejudice, but you can paint that same picture without forcing your lead character into some farce where he accidentally becomes a domestic terrorist, and then is interrogated and tortured by a collection of klansmen masquerading as federal agents.
