This book has taken a definite dip.
Remember how good it was?
The comedy of Ollie running around naked on the Island.
The brutality of Connor getting zapped.
The gut punch that was Ollie & friends anguishing over Connor in the hospital.
The Art
Where Cliff Chiang's pencils were gorgeous, Mike Norton's pencils seem to be trying to imitate Cliff's, but it comes across as a cheap knockoff. Plastic Man looks especially horrible, and the rest of the cast look like they were taken from animation stills straight out of an old episode of Scooby-Doo circa 1973. I also hate the way Batman looks on the last page. Is that Adam West?
The Story
It seems like I have been reading the same issue (more or less) for the last 3 months. The people that were responsible for zapping Connor with the Veggie ray are not suffering and/or brought to justice yet. Ollie and Canary are still trading barbs and quips, and it is quickly losing my interest. I know that Winick knows how to write. It just seems that the story is in a holding pattern.
I want to like this book. I really do. Arrow and Canary are definitely in my top 5 chars in the DC universe, but this is killing me.
Art - 1 (Poor)
Story - 2 (Average)
Added 6/14
The other thing that I think is getting me is the fact that after the whole gut punch that was Connor getting zapped, and then the hospital issue, which included the iconic "GET ME MY BOW" panel, Green Arrow and Black Canary are back to their old joking selves in the following issues. I would think that Ollie would be singularly focused on making someone pay.
The "alien" issue, while funny, seemed completely inappropriate given the circumstances.

OUCH!
Its been 24 hours since I posted this review and I might have been a teensie weensie bit harsh.
Its just that when the first 5 or so issues of this book came out I was so pumped that I had another title to look forward to reading. My bitterness comes from the fact that it has been disappointing the past 3 months. (4 months?)
don’t take it back! give in to the dark side…
@TehDave
Oh I dont take it back. Smatter-O-Fact. i just kicked a kitten too!
I agree about the art.
I can definitely see your points, but I guess they just don’t bother me all that much. I actually enjoy Norton’s style, even if it’s a copy of Chiang’s style. I appreciate that they’re trying to keep the tone of the book. I agree with you that it seems Ollie and Dinah have reverted back after the tragedy of the first five issues, but it’s hard because if they were being mopey all the time, then well, they wouldn’t be that much fun to read. I think we’re going to see Ollie become more focused as he gets closer and closer, and I’m actually really excited at Batman’s involvement in the next one.
Nice review.
if anything i’ve begun to appreciate what chiang was doing more thanx to norton’s re-creation of the style. norton gets better with each issue. before i read this i considered dropping it but when i saw the art, which doesn’t necessarily define my picks, i let go the idea. yes, the story has stalled, but i can’t think of many stories that don’t
