Let me start by saying that I am complete homer for anything Green Arrow related, so it's not entirely unexpected that I really enjoyed the new GA#1. What was unexpected, was, well just about everything in the issue. Let me iterate:
1) Green Arrow is the character, not Oliver Queen. Fascinating and exciting take on the character. For the last few years, its all been about Oliver Queen (mayordom, marriage, being a bad dad, etc. etc.) This opens alot of potential story!
2) Green Arrow was not mopey. That's important. He was a little hardbitten, but he showed the joy that is GA giving little kids "mini-hotdogs". When Ollie works its because he loves life, and will fight anyone that threatens "the people". But, he's not Batman. Green Arrow has always been about finding joy in the fight, not just living for the fight. Krul hit that tone here, and that's a great sign.
3) The beginning of a rouges gallery for Green Arrow - not just everyone else's cools enemies. (Aside: Over the last 75 issues, GA's best moments have been against Deathstroke and the Riddler...not his enemies. Here's hoping that the new GA builds up some awesome foes).
4) Star Forest. It's weird, it's wild, it's woolly - and relevant to the DC Universe. You better believe that turning off a Power Ring is a seriously powerful defense. We're getting our assess kicked by "insert name of Latern Core here" - let's get to Star Forest. Also, it ties Arrow into Brightest Day, and gives you some reasons for GL and the core to come by and visit Ollie. Bonus points, the Star Forest weirdness gives us a believalbe reason to think that GA can avoid high-tech and modern detection, and gives the bow and arrow a boost against other super powers....score!
5) WHO ARE GREEN ARROW'S MERRY MEN! WELCOME TO SHERWOOD FOREST! If you're going to play on the Green Arrow is a people's hero, fighting the good fight against the rich (and its apparent from this setup that this is the tone of the book), YOU BETTER GO WHOLE HOG! So, we're going to get beat over the head with the whole Robin Hood theme then, GA needs Merry Men...done!
If there was a complaint, it was a little wordy. But, I'm willing to accept a little wordiness in a big, reboot book. On the whole, the entire issue was dense, and felt weighty and meaty.
Exciting start to a bright new day...
