This series just came out of no where. When I first heard Grant Morrison wrote a long way back a Doctor Who comic, I was thrilled. Just getting into the tv series I was intrigued to see how one of the Gods of DC handled the Doctor in his early years of writing. The last issue was pretty good, although a bit jarring for a noobie like myself. Now with this second and final recollection of Morrison’s work I have to say. Even if you are new to the Doctor Who universe, this is fun no matter what type of fan you are.

Following the chronicles of the Sixth Doctor, we find him and his friends (a girl name Peri and a talking Penguin no less) on a water planet. After witnessing a time lord’s death we are thrown into a mystery with a return of a fimilar face and a revelation of one of the Doctor’s feared enemies. This issue had a lot going for it, a great mystery and humor to it. Although I’m sure going back and trying to watch the episodes with the Sixth Doctor would be more helpful to me, I never lost track with this issue. Unlike the previous issue, there was little to go back and check references too or get confused with. This was a fun and exciting story that could easily been done with the Tenth Doctor. But there are little glimises into the mystique of Morrison. The last page in general (wont spoil it but) has the very chilling reminder that life isnt fair. This is the type of Morrison that we would all love (or hate) into the present day.

The art by Ridgway is also very well done. Sketchy in some places but detailed in others. Sorta on the same veins of Mike Mignola, Ridgway seems to let the backgrounds tell the story. That one huge panel on page 15 with the barren landscape is very impressive to look at, and he sets the mood right away in any of the pages we see. The color here is also nicely done as well, again setting the tone for this issue.

Overall this was just a fun sci-fi story that anyone can get into. I’m sure the idea of newbies in the Doctor Who universe would love to see a story with the Tenth Doctor….and there is one-shots and mini’s out with him as well. But if you took out the Doctor in this issue and put in a random person into the mix, the story would still be the best I’ve read this week. With economic times being hard right now I know a 3.99 issue sounds pricey. But both issues are definitely worth your time and IDW is going to continue with this series next month (sadly no more Morrison stories). Hands down for me, the Pick of the Week.

Story: 5 - Excellent
