I had eleven books this week. After reading them I found myself, as I often do, thinking back to the issues that stuck with me. Gotham City Sirens struck a cord, it was a book that I grinned stupidly while reading (and not just because of the cheesecake art either). This felt like the Animated Series. When Catwoman squared off against “Boneblaster” (who makes me think of the sonic fellow from Batman Beyond, which was also fan-fuckin-tastic) she loses, if not for Ivy that is. Honestly, I’m enough of a fanboy that Ivy having Swamp Thing powers in this issue actually bothered me. That didn’t make it any less funny to see Boneblaster getting tossed around by a few vines in the background, while Selina and Ivy caught up like old friends. Then Harley, oh my dear sweet Harley, “Mr. J” forever in my mind, in that voice. Why are you so good at what you do Paul Dini? The dialogue was fun, smart, sarcastic, and it was great to see so many familiar faces in the changing city; even Boneblaster was excited to meet all the “oldschool” villains. Now we come to the ending, setting up shop in an abandoned animal shelter, sold to Selina, by “The Broker”. A realtor who specializes in selling hideouts to supervillains, did anyone else find this hilarious as a concept? Pitching an arboretum to Ivy, and then getting on the phone with the Mad Hatter about a storybook theme park next to an all girls school, that was great. The art in this was great, with the manga style expression lines and changing backgrounds during action sequences, it really added to the fun, friendly tone of the whole book. While grim and gritty Gotham is a great place to explore, it’s nice to spend 1/6th of your time there in Dini’s new playhouse.
