DOES THIS SHOE COME IN A SIZE 50,000?

I officially swore off Rick Remender. The man has good ideas, but I just don’t think he can execute. But now we have GIGANTIC. C’mon! It’s giant mechs and monsters! Now, as any fan of Doctor Who will tell you, it’s not fantastic aliens and monsters that make good science fiction, but good story and characters. Whoever is in the giant mech we meet early on in issue #1, we get a real sense of his panic and plight. The artwork is simply gorgeous, and we get a real sense of scale in comparing the size of the giant mech to the people, vehicles and buildings. Just like the relaunch of the Gamera movies several years back, there are just as many shots from ground-level as there are from above, which I believe is also what they were going for in the Cloverfield movie (but shakycam made that a little difficult to pull off). There are some good scenes of conversation between alien characters and human characters, so we are effectively introduced to people who will probably be part of the story. The end of the issue has a lengthy Remender explanation of the concept behind this book, but this just means that once again we have good IDEAS on the table here. I’ll reserve final judgement until I see how it is all put together. If I really want some good kaiju action, I can always go back and read Dark Horse’s Godzilla comics or DC/Image’s Giantkiller by Dan Brereton.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
