I have been a fan of G.I. Joe since I was a kid, but I was skeptical of this series after the Devil's Due one went sour after a few issues. Now that the creators aren't trying to pretend that they are the same folks (Snake-Eyes and Stalker were in Vietnam, right?), it seems like the series is off on the right track. It's actually been a slow build for the first couple issues, re-introducing some of the characters and getting readers up to speed on what this is all about. But this issue features some solid action, and we get to see members of the Joe team working together and some good back-and-forth between the characters, without the general cheeziness that was so prominent in the Marvel series. In fact, the dialogue from Chuck Dixon is what makes this for me. It is the right mix of military jargon and humor so you can get a feel for them quickly without a whole lot of exposition. Instead of, "This is Scarlet. She's a tough broad, won the Blah-blah Medal and is trained in blah-blah-kun-do" we get this exchange between Hawk and one of his troops:
Troop: Sir, you're on fire.
Hawk: Great. I just had this jacket tailored.
Maybe a little too much Jesse "the Body" from The Predator there, but it paints the picture that Hawk is in charge and a bad-ass dude. We get the same kind of feeling when we see Destro's exchange with The Baroness. Very brief, but lays the groundwork nicely. Screenwriting 101. Show don't tell, and get in and get out.
Robert Atkins art is spot on, as always, and the colors are nice and vibrant, which works well for this book. Overall, I'm into this and anxious to see where it's going.
