They did it....they did it!
I am a huge fan of G.I. Joe and was hoping that this reboot would bring about a much needed kick in the butt for this franchise. The Devil's Due series of comics was pretty good but it wasn't able to bring the G.I. Joe brand into the forefront of our current comic golden age. Comics are cool, geek is cool and this franchise which I love was not relevant. Until Now.
The story by Chuck Dixon was awesome. More importantly his take on the characters were better than awesome. In this first issue we got Duke (tried and true), Beachhead (suffereing from memory issues - "love it!"), Scarlett (strong smart woman without being apologetic), General Hawk, Dial Tone (spoiler; now a woman, love the choice, more woman were needed), Shipwreck (in a diving suit which suits him) and Snake Eyes (awesome calling card to Scarlett on pg 19). There were a couple more but that's a brief sample. The characters were great, they read like good comic book protagonists with that perfect blend of archetype cliche's and someone you actually know. Beachhead is the best example by stating that he is your typical "lifer" yet he carries on a great conversation with Duke, about what they miss while being entangled in a career that removes you from your old life.
The art by Robert Atkins is near perfect. It could be perfect but at 29 years old I am not sure that I know what perfect should look like. His characters are fabulous and their faces have great detail. Scarlett is definitely the star in this first issue in that area, as her emotions are in tune with the dialog and the situations created by Chuck Dixon. The two-page spread of the pit gave me a 'geek-gazam' with all the vehicles skillfully put into the background. Really he did an amazing job from page 1 right though page 22.
In addition I must mention Chris Mowry who is credited with lettering this issue. Until I found this podcast and website I never paid attention to the details but I must say that Mowry is a "Lettering Genius". More than any other comic I have ever read I felt the dialogue come alive in this issue by the subtle use of bold to emphasize certain words. It gives the reader a chance to feel the pace of the conversation and I loved it.
Everyone on this project from Joe legend Larry Hama, to the guy cleaning the toilets at IDW should be proud of the product that they put out this month. I pray that this is the beginning of a trend and that this franchise will start to garner some (much needed) recognition and support in the wide world of comic books.
