Outsider, for me, has been one of the strongest Flashpoint books, and like many other people, I hope he hangs around in the new 52. James Robinson has penned a really interesting character, and this issue closes the series really well. In this issue, we learn the origin of The Martian Manhunter in the Flashpoint Universe, and we see that unlike his previous incarnations this version of the green dynamo is a tortured soul who’s gone very, very bad. The history between these two characters is interesting, and as you read, you get the sense that there could have been so much more that could have been done with this character and this idea. Instead, Robinson is forced to wrap the story up, and use a lot of exposition to get the story across. I think that given the time (instead of a 3 issue mini) Robinson could have delivered another great series with some extra issues to build the mystery and more time to let the reveal and it’s consequences sink in. I found this to be a strong close to the series, and I love how Robinson has tied this character’s story into the main Flashpiont narrative. It’s one of the better techniques, and it displays why Robinson is such a great writer. The art by Javi Hernandez is good. The coloring on the book is sort of like the way Scott Kolins is being colored these days with that chalky, textured feel. It works fine for his style, and Hernandez tells a good visual story.
