As a long-time reader of Green Lantern (late 80's or early 90's), I was very interested in what they would do with this issue. I thought this issue was pretty good and it left me wanting more.
First, the art. I didn't recognize the name Felipe Massafera, but after a little research I saw he did the wonderful Alex Ross-esque covers for a number of comics, most notably "Superman: The Last Family of Krypton" mini and some JSA issues. So I had seen his work before, but didn't know it. His pencils and inking were great. The coloring was inconsistent in spots, but parts were very well done. The opening segment with Abin Sur as a child was really strikingly beautiful.
I know there are complaints that the character designs are based on the movie designs. I wonder if Massafera was instructed to do that, or if it was a personal decision. Probably the former, to tie in with the movie, but it was OK. I had no strong feelings either way.
The story was a mixed bag. It was interesting and I like how it tied in things from Blackest Night and the Red Lanterns. I liked the changes, which are what an Elseworlds-like event should have. But there were two things I did not like. I thought Abin Sur striking Sinestro was sort of out of character, despite the insults and painful past events. Also, the "Prophecy of the Flashpoint" just sounds dumb. Not another mystical Lantern prophecy!
