Being one of my most anticipated books of the week, I was actually pretty happy when this book found it’s way to the bottom of my stack.  “Oh joy,” I thought, “I’ll end on a good note.”  Sadly, this was not the case, as I found this issue to be somewhat of a disappointment.

My main beef with the issue comes from Phillip Tan’s art.  While I can appreciate that there is a certain audience out there for his brand of art, it’s just not my cup of tea.  The energy in his panels feels forced, and his action scenes are from a jarring perspective.  I also found his art to be very muddy and overdrawn, very much the way that Ed Benes’ art can often appear.  Every character doesn’t need to have 35 million muscle lines.  And I’m not a big fan at how he draws Renee;  her mask makes her look like a dried out human corpse.  The scene with Libra was also confusing as the final panels of that scene were very weird (and it wasn’t quite explained what happened to Crispus Allen afterward…he just sort of reappears).  While there were some panels that were ok to me, for the most part I was not impressed.

The writing in this issue is most excellent as Rucka has a real handle on these characters.  While he didn’t spend as much time with Renee as I would have liked, his characterization of Crispus Allen was spot on and a lot of fun to read.  It’s interesting how his sense of justice and vengeance are interplayed in this issue.  The only request I would have of Rucka is to spend more time laying the background for these characters and this situation.  Having not read the previous Question series, I’m not too caught up on the Question or who she’s fighting, and people who didn’t read Gotham Central may just wonder who the hell these people even are.

With my problem lying the art department, I’m a little uncertain if I’m going to continue reading this title.  Being that comics are a visual medium, it’s very hard for me to buy a book that I just don’t like to look at.  I think I’ll scope out the next issue, and if the art can improve, I’ll be on board for what Rucka has in store for these characters.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 1 - Poor

  1. Actually, the Question drawn with a corpse-like face actually looks kind of interesting!

I’m trying to avoid all the Final Crisis tie-ins but I wanted to see what I’m missing.  Not a big fan of a great character like Crispus Allen being saddled with the Spectre persona, and not a fan of Montoya question either, so it’s good I didn’t pick this up.

  2. I enjoyed the art.  My only complaint would be the action sequences.  As you pointed out, they can be a little hard to follow.  I almost laughed out loud when Renee did a FLASH KICK from Street Fighter.

  3. @MotherPuncher~  Ha!  Totatlly.  Actually, a funny thing happened at school today that relates to Street Fighter.  In filling out a sheet about himself, one of my students stated that Ryu from Street Fighter was one of his heroes.  And they say video games have a negative effect on kids!

The art in this book was really frustrating.  It made a lot of beats incomprehensible.  I’d like to read the script for this because the visuals here just weren’t pulling their weight in the storytelling department.

  5. Wow, I’m very surprised by the dislike of the art! It’s some of the best stuff I have seen in a while, even if some of the action scenes were a little unclear, those splash pages were beautiful (IMO). The art was the highlight of the book for me, and that’s saying a lot because the writing was as great as it always is, when Rucka is involved.

I guess it’s true what the say about beauty being in the eye of the beholder.

  6. @WadeWilson~  Phillip Tan is definitely a cup of tea kind of guy.  He’s just not mine.  I can definitely see what people like in him, but for a story like this, I wanted something else.  I am glad that you liked it though, and I’m sure there are others out there who would agree with you.

  7. @PaulMontgomery   My thoughts exactly.  The art was pretty but I couldn’t follow it.  I kept thinking about how wonderful the fight scene was in the last issue of "Five Books of Blood" (unfortunately I can’t remember the artist but that issue *rocked*) compared to this where I couldn’t figure out what was going on when Renee was fighting.

I’m not sorry I picked this up, because I feel like it’s going to get really good when there’s a chance for Renee and Cris to interact.  But this issue was simultaneously too much set up (too long to get to the main conflict) and too little (I wasn’t entirely sure what was going on with Renee, and I’ve read the previous series).
