My expectations for Final Crisis were high. After all, this is the story that lured GM back to DC; his Magnum Opus, his love letter to the DCU. Despite having no real affinity for the New Gods and their ilk, I have been looking forward to this book for a long time.

I haven’t been disappointed.

With GM you can always expect big concepts, novel ideas and deft dialogue. All of these are in evidence in Final Crisis #1, though there are precious few fireworks yet. As an opening chapter, all the groundwork is laid, with the tone and story threads set. The major players (at this point) are introduced, and GM showed remarkable restraint with the BIG DEATH.

JGJ’s art is a flawed triumph; his images are pleasingly solid, allowing the reader to enter the world presented to us on the page, but he struggles a little with his depiction of costumed characters, especially Batman. The poses can sometime look a little awkward, and stiff, but this only a slight nit-pick.

My one small caveat is only tangentially related to Final Crisis, and that is Countdown. I understood the necessity for that series, to set up the status quo for GM’s story, yet the two don’t marry (at least they don’t seem to). Perhaps that bloated series could have been condensed, and perhaps GM should have had some hand in it. Otherwise it can be ignored, and Final Crisis can stand alone.
