I am not a young man anymore. This realization hits me when I take a wrong step and my knee groans in protest, when my five year old looks to me for answers, and every week when I dive into my fresh stack of comics. I’ve been reading comic books for over 30 years so I feel reasonably qualified to say that Jonathan Hickman’s run on Fantastic Four (and FF) is the greatest in the history of this storied book. Hickman’s most obvious talents are his world-building, and his Morrisonesque mastery of crazy ideas. However, I think the biggest reason his Fantastic Four run has been so good is the amount of emotion and heart he’s put into Marvel’s first family. This one and done issue has a bit of the former and a helluva lot of the latter. This is a simple issue that focuses on Reed and Ben’s friendship although they only share one page together. This issue will forever change the way you think about Ben Grimm. This issue might well make you cry (I did). This issue isn’t flashy. It might well be the most understated chapter in Hickman’s run. This is not the most important comic to come out this week, but it is in my opinion the best. I hope we all realize what an epic run Hickman is giving us. I plan to savor every moment because as this issue shows sooner or later all these moments will be gone. Pick of the Week.

Story: 5 - Excellent
Art: 4 - Very Good

  1. I know how you feel, I haven’t read this issue yet but I am so gutted that Hickman is leaving this title & FF.
I just don’t think he can be replaced, the only writer I can think of who might do a similar good job would be Gillen!

  2. I read your review just before heading to my LCS, wouldn’t have picked this issue up if not for having read this… Thanks for the tip, my POTW as well!

  3. Thanks, mithrandir! I was hoping my review might convince somebody on the fence to pick this up. This really is one of the most emotionally resonant issues of Hickman’s run.
