You know, bearing in mind the fanfare which announced Millar and Hitch's intention to take over FF, I often think it's become somewhat overlooked. I know that opinion is fairly positive with the recent issues, but it never seemed to reach the heights that Millar was aiming for in terms of general popularity. Has that somehow helped the story to shine, away from the glare of the spotlight? I don't know, but it seems amazing to me that a book put out with regularity by the Ultimates team doesn't seem to rate much mention. All I can really say is that he succeeded with me. I was never an FF fan, now I'm loving this and also resolutely looking forward to Hickman's debut this summer.
This was great Marvel comics. It was operatic and grandiose, bombastic and thrilling. Doom has always been a great villain, but I loved him here. When the Master enters his mind and convinces him he's in this fantasy Earth, where he's married to Sue and she's expecting his child, of course we know it's not real, but it's compelling and makes him sympathetic in a way he doesn't always manage to be. As for the new villain, Doom's teacher and his new apprentice, they're both doozies. This Master is a classic skin crawling supervillain. It's always clearly a comic book, but within those confines he is truly scary, a villain clearly capable of upping the stakes and challenging the team.
The Hitch art isn't as great as it has been, but I know that there are various reasons for this and I don't mean it as a slight to the artist. It's still strong, and the great sense of layout and design are still there. It still manages to stretch at the boundaries of the page. I think one of the factors here has been the lead time Hitch needed for Reborn, and this stuff still bodes very well for that new project.
Millar has done what I wasn't convinced he could. I didn't like the first arc at all, and I was close to dropping the title. He got me to do the almost impossible for me and the Fantastic Four, he got me to take a second look, and from there I was hooked.
