There is a LOT going on in this issue. Not only is it a set up for a new status quo, it is a celebration of all the things that have gone before, both recent and classic. The story picks up without a hiccup with the characters and situations all set up from the previous run, and it's treated affecionately, such as Dragon Man crying out over his muffins or Sue lamenting the way the kids messed up the room. There are touches of the fantastic like the opening MacGuffin-saurus fight and Johnny having a date that nevertheless looks out over a truly alien battle scene in the Negative Zone. Bagley is a great artist for this, as his character designs handle the variety of characters needed, and he makes the mundane and the alien mesh really well. I would be curious to know if this was written Marvel-style, because I would like to give credit for the pitch-perfect choice of panels and layouts. Every close-up and every splash panel is used to its best effect. My criticisms for the art (aside from the obvious that no one on earth seems capable of drawing Valeria) may have more to do with the inking. I am used to Farmer being a more gentler, lyrical inker, and the styles don't seem to be meshing well this issue. As for the writing, I am concerned that a lot of the familiar things we are seeing, such as Yancy Street Gang or Johnny's dates, Herbie, etc, are being used because we won't be able to see them if the new status quo takes the team into space for the foreseeable future. The FF work best when it's the sci fi elements intermingling with the normal world, and to have them move more fully into the sci fi seems like there could be danger in having them move too far. Still, I am intrigued to see where it goes. Even better than Franklin's foreshadowing dreams of foreboding doom, is the delicious dramatic irony that Reed is keeping the true purpose of his trip a secret from his family. This is the alpha male Reed that we love to hate, and will promise some great character moments down the road. As Reed says, "Trust me."
