Let me state/admit up front that I am a sucker for Fables issues that focus on the Homeland, specifically during the Adversary’s rule. Now that you are aware of my biases we may proceed:
In my last review of a Fables book (Literals #3) I stated: “The quality of Fables (in my opinion) is almost exclusively dependent on the quality of the characterizations in the book.” I feel this issue perfectly illustrates my point. The character Dunster Happ (despite his awful, awful name) is a very interesting character. He is somewhat inexperienced, very intelligent, and extremely skilled while still being portrayed as vulnerable. Meanwhile, the Dark Man (or boogie man, as the case may be) is an appropriately intimidating nemesis and narrator. This single issue feels like a complete story and also an excellent set up for what is to come. I enjoyed it more than any single issue of Fables I have read in quite some time.
Thank you or your time.
