From the preview I read in Wizard Magazine, (alright, you have the right to rag on me), to this afternoon as I sat in my car and devoured the book and my lunch with equal voracity, this book has never let me down. Clever writing, fantastic art, and a keen use of continuity add up to one of the most reader rewarding books currently being produced.
Spoiler shield on... Well, we knew there would be casualties and it seems that those princes of the fairy tale land, Flycatcher and Charming, were destined the pay the ultimate sacrifice for a community that never fully appreciated the nobility and leadership of either man in his finest hour. With the true adversary captured and forgiven, what could be left for this book to explore? How about hundres if not thousands of worlds left without leadership for the first time in generations. Just when you thought the book that has reinvented itself from mystery to political drama to romance to spy thriller to epic war couldn't morph again, it has proven that the true staying power of this book is it's ability to stay year after year, arc after arc, issue after issue.
I understand that this book isn't for everyone, and I am not suprised. The premise is sort of hokey and the constant genre redefining makes it tough to anticipate where the series is going. But for those who have been on board from day one, today was a truly great day in comics.
Art: 4 - Very Good
I’d call POW on this one, except it’s the first one I read. We’ll see if anything outshines it.
This was a terrific issue of fables, once again. I hope the next one will provide as a good jumping on point for some of my friends that don’t want to read 75 issues of back story, even though they are great. I couldn’t agree more this this review.
Thanks for the review. I’m on board!
I jumped on 2 issues back when the arc started, and I’m sold. I’ll be picking up some of the trades tomorrow. Good review.
Um, did I miss something about Flycatcher along the way? He’s still king of his own realm last I remember…
I think seeing the grave marked Mr. Toad threw him off, i also remember him still being alive i will need to invistigate this.
You’re right, I must have misinterpreted that grave, for some reason. I was wondering why they wouldn’t mention his death on panel.
