Disappointed is a bit of an understatement on my reaction to this issue of Fables. I'm one of the biggest Fables fans around... I get it in issues, trades, and am clamoring for hardcovers, too. But, I couldn't help but feel a bit, let's say, unfulfilled with this issue. The war with the Empire is over, and really, that was it? The only major casualty was Prince Charming, who as we all know, will certainly be back (if Goldilocks can be resurrected, PC shouldn't have any trouble). But honestly, his 'death,' although surprisingly noble, was no more shocking than Bluebeard's death way back in issue 16.
I mean, I guess it's technically true that 'nothing will ever be the same again,' as there's no Adversary or Empire anymore, but this really just felt like Willingham wanted to wrap up his Empire/Adversary antagonism and wasn't quite sure how to do it. I still have complete faith that Willingham has awesome storylines brewing for the next 75 issues, but I would've liked to see something a little more 'epic' to conclude 5+ years of stories. Here's hoping Captain Hook and Peter Pan are involved in the next stories.
Art: 4 - Very Good
I thought I was the only one underwhelmed by this issue. Good to know I’m not alone. The whole campaign against the Empire seemed to strike the same note the whole time (and what a long, long time it was): the good guys are winning, winning so easily. I kept waiting for the Empire to turn it around, to make for some drama. They almost did that in this issue, but right after certain major characters died, they came right back (save one). I love this series, but this particular arc was boring, boring, boring. I also think the format of the art is getting stale. Okay, we get it, you can do two-page spreads, with thin pointless verticle panels on the side. I love Buckingham and Willingham, but here’s hoping that the next storyarc will seem like it’s a reboot, narratively and stylistically.
