It was good....ish.
I'm conflicted. I hate to do this, because the artist had his vision and it is his story, but i can see a better way this could have been pulled off.
This is a strange story after all, set in the real world so squarely when dealing with it's setting, but then adding in the horrific and outlandish elements of the invasion force from another reality, it creates a jarring transition from something that at once holds public policy to be paramount and ignores, or is unaware of, the larger existential threat against it. And i feel like that threat is what is driving Mich to higher office, the belief that he needs to be in the drivers seat to save the world when they try again. That was the point of this issue, he knows they are going to try again and he needs to be the hero and save the world when that time comes, at the cost of his close friends and his mom's life as well. That is the tragic element that Mitch talks about in the book, that much is made clear by the final images of him with the photos of those he lost. But what about that goal that he was striving after? There is a greater threat here which hasn't been answered, so the story is not over. When are they coming? When they do come, what happens? Is being Vice president not enough to lead the world? Wouldn't the NSA have some plan to deal with this evil, assuming that they have been briefed, which we are lead to believe.
The better ending that i can see based on what is said in the starting pages about how there are no happy endings, is Mitch lying on his death bed of old age or sickness, trying so hard not to die, because he really thinks that he is the only one who can save the world from what is coming, but he's dying and eventually you have to let go and pass on the torch to another generation and trust they'll be OK, your forced to, because there are no happy endings, only pauses, between actions, and death.
Oh and the art has been off for the last few issues and this issue was no exception, that's jarring. I know it took forever to come out, but i would have been happy had they taken more time with this, because now it's like this forever.
