I get excited when I see that a creator has thrown him or herself into a project enough to create, write, and do the art for a comic. Clearly, this is something they’re very passionate about. So I go in really wanting to enjoy it.

Unfortunately, this book is nothing but a series of action movie cliches, complete with the “bullet time” physics of The Matrix movies, and dialog like “You just bought yourself a world of hurt, Missy!”.

Image is throwing out a ton of titles for their twentieth anniversary, and, sadly, I don’t think this is one that’s going to be remembered at the end of the year.

There’s an interview with Raffaele Ienco on the back pages where he seems to be very proud of how derivative his work is. That saddens me.

His artwork is fine. Flipping back through the book, I’m enamored of his visual storytelling style, it’s his dialog and narration that fail him here. I’d be very interested to see him put his art to someone else’s script.

Comments

  1. I hate seeing good artists write their own stories and do poor jobs. We all learned from the early Image Comics years that good writers really do matter. Nice art with lacking stories leaves everybody disappointed in the end.

  2. Akamuu, spot on review.
