The only Doom Patrol era that I know intimately is the Grant Morrison era. Morrison's run was a great, crazy mix of the superhero tropes of good guys vs. bad guys and completely off-the-wall reality bending villains. Keith Giffen's Doom Patrol is looking to be a bit different than that. Giffen is attempting to make a mix of a group of heroes harboring a Suicide Squad style disregard for personal safety and a villain that wildly alternates between discussions of self and trying to kill the heroes just to see if it'll work.
And it's working. I'm loving every page of it.
As always, it's the character moments that stick out the most. The Chief cutting off Cliff with a seemingly unnecessary speech about what niche the Doom Patrol fills gave me a bit of a chuckle, as it was just the right thing the team (and the readers) needed at that point. The team feeling confused enough to just allow the villain to dictate the when and how the two would fight was interesting.
The only thing I find a tad out of place is the chaplain that lives at the Patrol's home base. I'm sure this will lead to some great character moments in the future, but John Ostrander did the exact same thing during the first half of his original Suicide Squad run. I can't help but feel that Giffen is trying to make a spiritual successor to that series just as much as he's trying to make a new Doom Patrol story. That isn't a complain so much as a desire for that old Squad run to be reprinted somewhere so that new readers can see the impact that series continues to make.
The art is still lovely, especially that new design on Robotman. The final shot of the issue, as Cliff gets a strong close up, shows the design off well.
For the Second Feature of the Metal Men, we get more light-hearted, enjoyable zaniness. To dislike this feature is to hate fun. The "who is Copper" joke is wearing a little thin, but the Daily Planet's headline of "Lame-Ass Robots Destroy Satellites!" made me forgive the writing team. Of course, Maguire continues to hit it out of the park. If I only get 10 Maguire pages a month, I'm okay with that. It's better than nothing.
And why oh why hasn't Mercury pointed out he's the only metal that's a liquid at room temperature? That'd better be coming soon!

Hmmm. My paragraph breaks didn’t come through. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Perhaps it’s because I use Chrome? I dunno.
I didn’t pick this up because I’m trying to economize, but I really did like the first issue and hopefully will be able to check it out in trade or something.
Nice review! I’m surprised more people aren’t excited about this book. For $3.99, I don’t know if there’s better value for the money out there!
