You know what DC Comics 2013 Resolution should be? How about making sure the creators are properly advertised on the solicitations? I can’t even begin to figure out how many times this happened this year let alone the last couple. Don’t get me wrong: This doesn’t hamper my overall enjoyment of the issue whoever works on it. But DC clearly needs to do something about this for next year.

Anyways, enough of the ranting, I really enjoyed this issue because Chirs Mieville is finally getting the hand of writing comics. No bizarre monologues or Grant Morrison-like narration. Just straight up adventure comics right here. We do get some strangeness here with the various superhero designs and a debut of (possible?) new villain. It did take me a while to figure out what the new villain’s powers were. But that might have been more of the art then anything else. I do love how Nelson and Manteau are interacting with each other. I’m starting to bond with these two as a result. It took a long time but it finally feels like it is paying off to continue with this series.

David Lapham takes over art duties again and while it isn’t as great as his work on #6, there is a lot to enjoy here. You can’t beat his superhero designs and I could kill to see an entire issue of these designs in a single issue. His characters look a bit wonky at times but the faces that emote are real life like. Hopefully “The Centipede’s” powers are better defined next month. Cause again, I had a hard time figuring out what his powers were for a bit. Also: A pretty good take on a sperm whale. Let’s see Ivan Reis do that!

With China Mieville finally getting the hand of writing a comic, this series has hit its stride. I’m seriously starting to bond with the characters and he is doing a great job adding layers to the mystery of the dial. While David Lapham’s art isn’t as perfect as Mateus Santolouco’s; he is a welcome addition to a vastly underrated comic book. If only DC can figure out how to market it…

  1. This is the only DC comic I’m going to keep reading after the Rotworld crossover and Death of the Family arc in Batman is complete. Great review of an underrated gem.
