It’s History
1937 to 2011. Wow. Really when you stop and think about it Detective Comics uninterrupted run seems almost impossible. What with Wars and industry witch hunts, comic book burnings, superheroes losing popularly to cowboys and pirates, and whole host of other factors, Detective weathered over 70 years but this month it’s run comes to end and in September Volume 2 will begin. And even though there may be saddness in this, come September I get to walk into my local comic shop and hold in my hand Detective Comics #1 – the first time anyone has done this in 70 years – that makes me smile.
This is history….
Issue #27: first appearance of Batman and James Gordon
Issue #38: First appearance of Robin
Issue #58: First appearance of The Penguin
Issue #140: First appearance of The Riddler
Issue #225: First appearance of The Martian Manhunter
Issue #233: First appearance of Batwoman
And now with issue #881 writer Scott Synder wraps things up. His 11 issue run will go down as one of the great runs of the comic, if not one of the great runs of any comic period. If you haven’t read the past issues stop reading this review and go get them….I’ll wait……..
…ok, got’em? Good. Pretty great stuff uh? What I love about Synder’s work is that he is not trying to compete with any other media, he is writing a comic book and not directing a movie. He understands the written word sometimes holds greater power then a 2 page Splash Page. But when the story calls for a splash page he makes the most of it. Beautiful writing is all I can say. Issue 875 is by far the single best comic I read all year. I get chills thinking of the stories Synder has ahead of him in his career. I can not wait to read them.
Synder’s partners in crime during this epic run, Jock and Francisco kicked ass. Outstanding work from both artists and each perfectly suited for the storyline they drew. I just can’t see Jock’s art giving me the same impact Francisco’s did on the James Jr storyline, and visa versa, Francisco just wouldn’t be right for the Killer Whale arc. Together these two guys killed it on Detective Comics. Stellar job.
The last issue of Detective Comics goes on sale today. Go get it. This is history.
