Recently I have not been able to get online to check my pull list so when I arrived at my comic book store all the new releases were fresh to me and what suprised me the most was when I was going through my file I saw that this months detective was drawn by Francesco Francavilla and not Jock.

I was skeptical as to wether or not Francvilla could carry the whole story as this was the first full issue of his artwork I have seen. I was not disapointed in the least. His artwork was striking and bold with sublime panel layouts even to the final slpash page which consisted of Comisioner Gordon standing at his desk whilst being framed in a silhouet of his son James’ head.

I enjoyed Francavilla’s artwork in the two back ups he did in the previous issues but this was a step above his previous work. With a clear sense of movement and action he has catapulted himself onto the list of my favourate artists which has now sent me scouring through his backlog of work espically his Comic Twart work.

Back when the creative team behind this book was announced I knew little about the writer Scott Snyder except that people had been enjoying his work on American Vampire a book that I haven’t picked up just for the the fact it has the word “vampire” in the title but Jock was most certainly the draw to this book for me (Pun very fucking intended!). I soon fell in love with the story after just reading the first five pages and Snyder is definately a “one to follow” in my book!

I had missed the previous issue due to a filing error at my local store but Snyder made the story easy to follow which was also aided by the fact that this issue opens with a continuation from the last Gordon back up which was a fun “to be continued” moment.

It felt as though there were two plots in this book but they were weaved together perfectly by Snyder one being an almost expository scene between James and Comissioner Gordon which draws you in right from the get go.While on the other hand you have this fun almost romp type fight with Dick Grayson Batman and Red Robin taking on a group of yakuza types who haven’t yet been identified.

The two mingle brilliantly and balance each other out perfectly. Each page of this issue seemed to just blow me away with lines that I still am quoting in day to day life!

the line that made me choose it to be my POTW had to of been “well they’re wearing sunglasses at night which means one thing…..They are very, very cool!”

N.B this is my first review s be gentle and I also had to rush it so please excuse sloppy grammar and spelling

Story: 5 - Excellent
