Andy Kubert and the whole art team really knocked it out of the park with this issue. The homages to the Batman artists of the past were great. This book was ALMOST worth the wait for the art alone. Storywise, it was okay, maybe even a little trite. The more Neil Gaiman comics I read, the more I start to think he is hugely overrated. Maybe it’s because everything he writes tends to become an event, and the actual books never end up living up to the hype. This two parter had moments of sheer brilliance, like when Alfred retells Batman’s origin last issue, but this issue didn’t impress me all that much. I don’t usually recommend books purely for the art, but this issue is the exception.

Story: 2 - Average
Art: 5 - Excellent

  1. Neil Gaiman is a brilliant writer, Sandman revitalized my love for comics.  But his style doesn’t transcend genres, like Alan Moore.  Also give the story 2, max.

  2. Hmmm.  I enjoyed the story.  Was it a classic story?  No.  An event?  Nah.  I agree with you, the writing best part of this run, by far, was the Alfred angle.  That said, you needed this exact story to create this stunning art.  I’m satisfied that a lot of people put off by RIP, or people who aren’t regular Batman readers, came for Gaiman, but hopefully fell in love with Kubert.
