Underwhelmed is the only word to really describe this issue. I know
that Gaiman was going for a slow burn, but it just seemed too much of
whatever it was trying to do. I mean it didn’t seem to do anything. It
pulled the lamest story device in fiction, the its all in his head
trope. Neil had free range to write a capstone to all of the Batman
stories ever, instead we get a poor man’s version of the animated
episode, almost got him, with the trite appearance of his mom at the
end. I don’t know what the whole good night moon ending was supposed to
do but I didn’t care for it. The only saving grace of this issue was
the art. Kubert’s aping of different styles was masterful and the
panels themselves were beautiful. I really think this was the best
thing he’s ever drawn, it’s just too bad he was drawing this
pretentious crap. 5/10
