It takes a lot of work to make a cannibal story mundane. I realize that sounds mean, but I don’t mean this is a poorly written story about cannibals, rather, this issue shows just how boring and sad life can be, even when you feast exclusively on human flesh.*
I found this issue a lot, pardon the pun, meatier than the first. Sure, there’s a bit of angst in it, it’s about a sad cannibal. But there’s no woe-is-me narration, and the character felt more honest than the protagonist in the first issue. And, for some reason, I find the idea of a flesh-eating office worker who tries to change his lifestyle for love a lot more realistic than some woman who dreams a death and flies away to Europe to rescue someone.
Cloonan’s art was perfect for this story. While I’m not always a fan of stark black and white comics, I feel that this issue would have certainly suffered with color.
* – ok, I have read two books so far this week, and both of them involved cannibalism. I don’t know what The Universe is trying to tell me, I just know my roommate is lucky that she cooks fantastic food for me.
