Art and Cover by BECKY CLOONAN

It's still Becky Cloonan on art here in issue two of Demo 2, but you can barely tell. She comments in the back matter of the issue how she wants to change up the art of Demo with every issue, and she succeeds completely. Everything about the art in the first issue of demo felt very clean and straight, like the architecture of the cathedral that plays such an important role in the issue. In this issue, every thing is much more shadowy, the mood is so much more bleak and stark. It really feels like someone else entirely, no small feat for any artist.
The story itself is clever, and strikes a strange balance between twisted and heartwarming. Our lead is a man we find out who can only stomach eating human flesh. Yet he is turn between his hunger pangs and pangs of guilt over having killed someone. He meets a girl he likes and asks her out, he wants to take her out to eat, to eat normal food like everyone else. He tries to eat some chicken, but has to rush immediately to the bathroom to puke it up. When he comes back to the table he makes up an excuse about why he has to leave early and he returns home, wishing he wasn't the way that he was.
Where Wood goes with the story from this point is clever, and is where the heartwarming part comes in. Sometimes people will go to great lengths to do the right thing; will go to great lengths for someone special. Wood and Cloonan capture that feeling perfectly, and it doesn't really hit you until you see our tortured man smiling on the last page.
