DEBRIS #1 feels like a pretty middle-of-the-road start to a series with some neat ideas, but it doesn't demonstrate whether or not the potential of those ideas will be realized by the end. (I'd like to think they will.)
It's another post-apocalyptic series, this one heaped with junk (or debris, if you prefer), and populated by creatures that seem to be built from the detritus. The settlement of Maiden is, like so many post-apocalyptic settlements, the "last tribe" of humanity, though how they could be remotely certain of that I have no idea.
Our hero, Maya, is a warrior-in-training under Maiden's Protector, Calista. Presumably they keep an eye out for umbra and, more importantly, Colossals, the most dangerous of the local junk-fauna. Exactly what Colossals are and where they come from looks like it'll be a major side plot to DEBRIS, though the solicit kind of gives it away, I think.
The story and art are both fine, I suppose, but if not for the presence of the Colossals, which look pretty neat and fill an interesting narrative niche, I think it would all be pretty hum-drum. Fundamentally, Maya's story is one you've read or watched a million times already, at least as far as this issue lets on; and while I'm no enemy of repetition, because things can be done well even if they aren't first, DEBRIS #1 gives me relatively little to latch on to in the "ways DEBRIS is different" department.
There is enough promise here for me to at least defer a decision on DEBRIS #2 until it is in front of me and I have cash in hand...but only just.

Exactly how I felt. I’m a huge fan of dystopian, post-apocalyptic stuff, but Debris #1 just didn’t hit my sweet spot. It has a lot of promise, I think, but it felt weak on both character and world development.
I’ll come back for issue 2, but it’s going to have to be a big improvement for me to continue on with Debris. I’ve got one post-apocalyptic sci fi Image title on my pull list that, two issues in, is doing everything right. Too bad Debris has to compete with Planetoid.
The main issue I had was the dialogue felt a little clunky. I think there’s a lot of potential with this book however.
it’s only four issuesso even it if isn’t the best thing you’ve read sci-fi wise picking up the entire run may make future sci-fi titles possible.
One to grow on!
