Over the last week or so I’ve gone back and read many of New 52 titles that I originally had no interest in. TEEN TITANS, SUPERBOY, and DEATHSTROKE were the most memorable. The first two titles for their seemingly hellbent dedication to mediocrity at best, and DEATHSTROKE for not really being bad but not being all that compelling either. Ultimately that might be the most unforgiveable sin but is Rob Liefeld’s presence on this book too severe a punishment? Sweet Lord, yes. I could not even finish this book. The plotting was worse than the dialogue and that was so unoriginal and stilted it could not even be referred to as stylized. The art? Well, Liefeld is Liefeld and that’s going to be a reason to read his book or,like me, a reason to shake your head and wonder what the heck is going on at DC editorial. This issue is a hunter becomes the hunted storyline that somehow has Lobo in it. Given the godawful characterization of Lobo in these pages and the superior presentation the character experienced in the most recent YOUNG JUSTICE cartoon, it makes me wonder why so many great characters are being so well used in every medium except the medium that spawned them. There is a definite hierarchy of quality in the New 52, and Liefeld’s DEATHSTROKE is so far from the top it is sad.
