I like to imagine that this is technically an ‘annual’ of sorts for a series that doesn’t exist anymore. (Whether it be the recent Cable run, or Cable and Deadpool; pick your poison) The last time we saw this series be ‘revived’ we had a bizarre, really late explanation on Cable saving Hope from Messiah Complex. Here we have yet another late release with Deadpool coping with Cable dying after Second Coming. These two characters have a really long history together, so it’s shocking we didn’t get any sort of cope from a Deadpool series till now.

Duane Swierczynski seems to have a bone to pick with Marvel, at least that’s how I view reading this. He constantly pokes fun at how the X-Men are now a days and also a few jabs at his own run with Cable. I like the jokes because what he writes about is pretty much truth, and I’m surprised he got away with doing them. With the actual plot at hand, Swiercyznski throws every possible past history with Cable into this issue. Hell I didn’t even remember Rumekistan until a friend of mine until AFTER I read this. It brings a lot of funny jokes about Eastern European countries and also Deadpool trying his damnest to create a Cable Amusement Park. It brings about some of the funniest panels of the week for me, especially with the squirt guns the size of Cable’s BFG’s. The issue does tend to drop a bit towards the end, and I think Swierczynski was running out of ideas/jokes by the end. But there is a good amount of jokes to keep me reading this till the end.

I like the cartoony style of Leandro Fernandez, but there also seems to be some homage’s in this as well. Everytime it goes into a flashback, and there are a lot of them, there does seem to be slight changes in the pencils. Now I can’t remember who was the artists for each issue it’s references, but again I do see the changes in there. One thing that did bother me though was how he drew Deadpool in the mask. There are times where he opens his mouth and the impression from the mask really doesn’t seem to fit. It’s like his mouth goes three times as wide and it kinda disturbs me.

While the last issue of ‘Deadpool and Cable’, I thought, was much better; this was still a lot of fun to read. Swierczynski has a good knack for writing Deadpool and some of the jokes in here are really hilarious. It’s a shame that the issue does sorta falls flat by the end, but what’s here is still pretty fun to read. I’m not sure if we can ever have another issue of this series, considering Cable is dead now. But considering how fun they are every year, I wouldn’t mind to see more of this next year as well.
