Maybe if this was the 1990's the Ifanboys would give this series a try. I mean after reading this issue it clearly feels like a late and extreme ninties comic. Hmmm....
ZOMBIES! CHICKS! EXPLOSIONS! GUNS! ALL RIGHT HERE ON DEADPOOL #4!!!!!!!
Okay in a less stupid way, this was yet another great issue by Way. I know people are iffy on his work, and having read some of previous stuff I can see why they are iffy. But this is seriously one of the better Marvel titles out there. There is no where else (okay maybe Incredible Herc) where you can get this much action and comedy out of your comic. Some really great jokes here like the exploding chair, or Deadpool pretending to be a zombie, or just the inner diaologue between Deadpool and himself are a blast to read.
The art by Paco Medina (now joined by Carlo Barberi) is just perfect for this series. It feels cartoony but still has a more realistic and edgy side to it. It's bright and fast paced, Medina seems good at keeping up with this type of comic and his character models are great. That hunchback is a funny look character and I dont think anyone else could draw that thing like he can. His maskless Wade is a little off sometimes, but overall I dont see any real faults with this book in terms of art.
So I recommend all of you to give this series a try. Like Incredible Herc, or Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Captain Britain; this has been a very surprise hit in an otherwise medicore year for Marvel. I hope Daniel Way continues to stay on this book because honestly, he is the best Deadpool writer ever and I dont see anyone else writing Deadpool the way he does.
Art: 5 - Excellent
He’s better than Joe Kelley?
TNC – You know that I am a big fan of your reviews, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I found this to be a distinct drop-off from the prior arc. The art was solid, but it was not outstanding. I was impressed by the way the two pencillers were able to mimic each other’s style (I am assuming that they drew separate panels), but something seemed to be missing.
More importantly, the plot of this issue was a little too meandering. Most importantly, the humor that was evident in the first few pages of the book seemed to wash out as the action progressed. What Way seems to do best is keep Deadpool fun and crazy. His Deadpool has an insatiable need to serve as both commedian and audience, as his inner dialogue keeps him going in unpleasant and untenable situations. I didn’t see that here.
My guess is that this was really a set-up for the next two issues, and that those issues will be better. This one, however, was more of a bunt single than a base-clearing triple.
Well I can understand that this was a bit more slow paced and not as hugely funny as the first arc. But this was still loads of fun to read and I think Way proved he can write a series without an event helping him.
I would say my only criticism of the book is the plastic explosive chair Deadpool had. Every page I was hoping to see it explode but it never did….Guess Way didnt want to take the obvious route with every joke.
@TNC – I have to say that the non-exploding explosive chair was actually, when I look back on it, the funniest thing in the book. (This isn’t sayin anything else wasn’t funny, its just perfect to have a chair that explodes and a character that regens and nothing happens.) The book was great. The only criticism I had was that I’m not sure of the other dialogue/monologue boxes that are in Deadpool’s head. Are they based on other character’s (i.e. Cable’s) thoughts or something? Can anyone shed light on this for me?
@Kreider: He just has multiple personalities really. I mean it’s not like someone got sucked into his brain or some sci-fi B.S. He’s just crazy as Starman is in JSA.
