Okay I admit it, I’m an idiot. I bought this stupid idea of a marketing ploy by Marvel and I admit it wasn’t the right thing to do. Yes I do like Deadpool and seeing more Daniel Way writing him was the real reason for me buying it. But this issue pretty much sums up just how confusing and pointless this idea was for Marvel. In short: It does nothing for me as a regular reader of the series and I find it hard to believe it would make the series any more enticing for new readers to buy.

Right off the back with the first page Way wants you to know this is a stupid idea. He makes fun of the ‘.1’ premise and there is a common theme with this issue. That, my friends, is exposition. Almost every page in this is either long expostions of character’s origins or backstories to explain certain plot elements. We get introduced to Deadpool twice, in two pages in a row, and we get a ton of information on the Wrecker and just why he is a hero in this issue. Then we get a ton of explanation on the crooked building owners, and we even get backstory on the old lady in this. Daniel Way is making sure your wasting your time with needless information and it becomes the entire joke of the issue. In one aspect I find it frustrating because I wasted my money on the story. However, I do commend Way for doing this because it had to have been tough to do all of this exposition and somehow tell a story and also jokes. Way’s been doing these type of things lately with his storytelling by trying to break outside of linear storytelling. So if you want some type of example of that then I guess this issue will suffice.

Bong Dazo (yes his real name) does art duties on this and I really do like his style. Ever since he did the crossover with Thunderbolts way back when I enjoyed his take on Deadpool. It’s very cartoony but has a sense of realism to it. Sometimes his characters can look a bit freakish, sometimes Deadpool and Wrecker has teeth five times bigger then the norm, but for the most part it looks good. Also there are some amazing two page spreads in this so some of his best work are in these pages. Shame he had to put those talents to such a pointless issue.

While I have not read any of the other ‘.1’ issues I have no doubt this continues the trend of them. They’re pointless, annoying to read if your already a reader, and bring nothing to the table for newbies. Hell Way also makes it apparant this story is pointless because he’s in space right now! So how this is a great jumping point for new fans if he’s in the middle of a story already is anyone’s guess. But Way does his best to point out how pointless this is ith endless exposition and you get some great art in this by Bong Dazo. Maybe if this is collected in a Deadpool trade it’s for a good laugh but for a single issue experience it should be avoided at all costs.
