I WAS going to pass on “Savage” but against my good sense I picked it up. Why? 2 reasons. Early reviews gave it decent praise, while I expected it to be another 52 flop and Vandal Savage has always been the man with immortality, somebody who I had never gotten a good grasp on before. So I gave it try. It was impressive. Especially for a book predominantly filled with dialogue.
James Robinson gives great characterization to Vandal Savage who has the attitude of a man who has “been there, done that” while keeping his condescending sarcasm and charm under tight reign. Subtle, but present, Savage has began to grow on me with this first issue of 3.
Bernard Chang who I’m not familiar with, really brought it home with his art. His art is what made the dialogue fantastic. His art has momentum, sucking you in and moving you along with his panels. The only reason I gave it 3 is because his art is NOT for everyone.
I’m glad to say that I will be following through with this short 3 issue story, and if anything, this issue is worth a good read through.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 3 - Good
