I have to say I was surprised at how much I liked this issue. It had 3
really well put together vignettes and actually added to the story
instead of coming off as a cash grab.
They definitely led off with the best story. It is a very fine line people tread when they write Namor. Making him too heroic or villainous and he loses his nuance. Here was just the right tone. I love having Norman pulling things like his "I used to be a villain and now I'm a hero, just like you." I think it speaks volumes about the both of them that this entire story had Namor buck nude and it seemed natural. Two men of power really didn't give a damn.
The second story with Mimic really only underlined how he hasn't been dealt with in any effective way outside of Exiles. I remember actually have his first appearance, and when he was toadying for Onslaught and showed up in X-Force. I don't remember him fighting Wolverine, and I have never found his "death" in the Hulk, but I've definitely felt he's been under utilized. I like seeing him climb out of the grave, though it reminds me of Peter David's comments about Elektra coming back from the grave and sloshing around.
Seriously, Marvel U embalmers have to be the worst or most laziest people on the planet.
As for Dark Beast at the end, that was probably my favorite, just because it took the scene with Namor and Norman and put it sideways. instead of Norman playing up his heroic side, Hank underlined how they were similar in their own mad scientist way. That resonated a hell of a lot more than the Namor scene, honestly.
I really liked this book, and I wasn't expecting to. The art was decent, but nothing to amazing.
