This was a gestalt of a lot of good things put together, adding up to something that didn’t quite work as well as it should have.  I love Diggle as a writer, especially when it comes to, ahem, “Darker” properties in the Marvel Universe… but here, some of his characters just come off wrong-handed, in what feels like an attempt to serve the story, rather than to make sense.  In particular, the way he writes Norman here just feels off.  Norman is more careful than the guy in the Iron Patriot suit portrayed in this issue, who comes off as an almost-Norman.  I loved, loved, loved Tom Raney’s art when I first saw it in Secret Invasion: Inhumans, but something is different here.  I don’t know if he’s rushed or trying a different style, or if it’s the inker, but it’s only about 75% as good as it was in the aforementioned title.  And finally, I love Bullseye, I love Bullseye as Hawkeye, and I love that his adoption of the Hawkeye identity is a tacit admission that Ronin is a stupid and silly idea.., but I digress.  On the one hand, this story is very simple and straight-forward.  It actually borders on being formulaic, and that’s what keeps it from being really special.  There are a couple chuckles and gasps along the way, but with a lukewarm opening such as this, I wonder how they’ll get 5 issues out of this mini.  One has to trust that the creative team will warm up and take this in a less-than-obvious direction, but the signs aren’t there yet.

Story: 3 - Good
Art: 4 - Very Good
