The first issue of this crossover was probably my favorite comic so far this year. Since then it's been a bit of an uneven ride, with some pacing problems in several of the issues, fight scenes dominating character moments, and motivations being mostly explained by 'wait and see.'
Fortunately, this issue really sticks the landing, and I'm almost back in the happy place where I was at the beginning of the crossover. Cyclops' plan for beating the seemingly much more powerful Dark Avengers turns out to be a pretty good one (and it calls back a Sentry story from early in New Avengers -- though you don't have to know that to appreciate how it unfolds; apparently, Dark Reign is going to be the time when all the groundwork laid for the Sentry really pays off). This issue also starts and ends with relaxed character moments, the kind of thing that recent issues of Uncanny have been sorely missing.
I still have some reservations; having a nice flashback moment between Scott and Emma cut off to be continued in an upcoming one-shot by a different writer is one of the more bizarre choices in storytelling-by-committee that I've encountered in a while. I'd think that if these characters need to have it out, it would be more effectively accomplished by an in-story scene by the same writer. But I guess you can't monetize coherent storytelling and you can monetize superfluous spinoffs. /lessons of Secret Invasion
Still, overall, I really enjoyed the writing in this issue. I wish I could say the same for the art, but Mike Deodato's pages are hard to follow, Terry Dodson's are much cleaner but seem a little off in tone, and they don't blend together well at all. My kingdom for some good art on a major X-Men book, seriously.
Art: 2 - Average

It’s all about advertising! That first scene in Scott and Emma’s bed was included for no other reason than for Marvel to say "Hey, there are more Dark X-Men books! Buy this!" I’m not complaining, though. I’m gonna buy it regardless.
It was a good scene, though; I think this book needed that scene. But the logistics of how this story is being told are puzzling —
Nice to see an ohcaroline review, especially on this book! I think that you hit the salient points quite well, although I thought that the Dodson transition worked pretty well (and I don’t like Dodson).
Has there been a good X-Men artist since Cassaday? A really good artist?
Dodson’s work on the telepathy scene made for a good transition, I suppose — because there was a reason for the visual separation, and because he’d done telepathy scenes earlier in the series. Other places it didnt’ blend as well, though. This trade is gonna be a bit of a patchworky mess, hmm?
Ohcaroline you pumped to read that Necrosha event? Aside from the fact that they have a major continuity error by involving Blink I think I might enjoy it assuming that they don’t screw it up.
Absolutely nothing I have seen about Necrosha has me wanting to be within 100 miles of it.
Though I don’t see how Blink’s presence is a continuity problem; I’m assuming the first issue will explain her presence.
@Ohcaroline: =p we’ll see. Marvel drops the ball on continuity with minor characters too often. If they don’t explain it I’m going to assume it’s Blink from some other universe since 616 is in Exiles.
Btw what has got you disliking Necrosha? The whole concept of 6 mutant-killing mutants organizing feels like an anti-xforce which has got my interest peaked.
Well, I hate XForce, and I have no idea what the concept of Necrosha is because the Clayton Crain art on the preview makes my eyes bleed.
