I have never been one to read Daredevil in issues on a regular basis. However, the temptation of The Kingpin's return was just too much. Well, I am hooked.
First things first. The art was just the best thing I saw this week. This is a perfect example of an artist using fairly simple techniques to create a mood. The backgrounds and spacing looked realistic at first glance, but the sad romanticism grew as the book progressed. More importantly, Kingpin is a tough character to draw. Too fat, he looks comical. Too small, he looks less imposing. Here, Aja struck a perfect balance.
Why so much focus on Kingpin? In a deft stroke, Brubaker has all but ignored Daredevil in his own book this issue. Here we meet a broken Wilson Fisk. His wife is dead, and he has learned to leave his gangster life behind. He is able to love, but he fears the horrors of his past returning. Despite his situation, Fisk is not ambivalent. He wants to remain reformed. He has no interest in the allure of crime.
Still, we know from frame one that no good will come of this. In many ways, this is the classic DOA story - we know that Fisk will become the Kingpin again, but we do not know how this will happen. The pleasure we take is in watching the car wreck - we dare not turn away.
Fantastic work on all sides.
