Though we don’t get to watch Conan crush his enemies, see them driven before him or hear the lamentation of their women, this issue is, inarguably, what is best in life.
Kicking off an adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s story “Queen of the Black Coast,” Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan give us a young, brash and stubbly Conan with the physique and gravelled voice of a heavy-metal bassist. Cloonan gives him just the right mix of gravitas (he walks around with bags under his eyes), charm (he’s always smirking or holding his hands to his lips, in an almost pouty way) and strength. Granted, we don’t get to see a lot of that strength in this issue: The only fight scenes happen off-panel, or are narrated by Conan. But this is a great character- and mood-building issue, and Cloonan’s acting and cinematic pacing are what carry it.
As a trivial aside: I love the fact that Conan’s word balloons have ragged edges, but everyone else’s are round. And he has a lot to say here. As Conan stories go, this is one that definitely gives you insight into the politics of Conan’s world, and the sense of honour he uses to live in it. I haven’t read the original, and I think I’d like to read it after this arc is done. Wood’s adaptation and Cloonan’s art are doing such a great job of building atmosphere that I don’t want to lose that just yet.
