This series has been a welcome surprise. I’d never read anything by Paul Tobin before, nor seen Juan Ferreyra’s lush, evocative artwork before, but Colder has made me a fan of both creators.

Colder is an unnerving story about a man named Declan, who’s just awakened from a catatonic state, and whose body has been preserved for decades by being preternaturally cold. There’s a mysterious killer named Nimble Jack sucking out people’s souls, and the connection between Declan, Jack, and mysterious other world that exists behind our reality is driving the mystery of the plot.

Ferreyra’s expressive art is beautiful to look at, when its not downright creepy in its depiction of Nimble Jack and the horrors that inhabit the other world. The story is still developing, but Tobin’s got a great grasp on dialogue and the mystery he’s building with Declan his cool condition is intriguing to say the least.

This comic is likely under a lot of people’s radars, but it shouldn’t be. Fans of Severed, Locke and Key, and even The Sandman will likely find something to enjoy about this story.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
