'Concentrated Mayhem. Feathers, Rage, and Hate. POYO!!!'
There are two types of crazy comic books. The first is just bizarre and literally maddening ideas inside for twenty two pages. (EX: John Rozum's Zombi) The second type of crazy comics come in the form off: 'Holy shit, holy shit. Did I just read that or dreamed it?' This issue of Chew falls with the latter because it is just absolutely insane to read.
Don't be fooled by the 'Flambe Part 3 of 5' tag on the cover. This issue doesn't further the story in any way, at least that I can see, and this seems to be a stand alone adventure of Chu and Colby. There is just so many laughs in this issue it's really hard to keep track. Whether it be the further 'unseen' assignments of the FDA, the ultimately insane workers of the USDA, and finally the most badass thing to ever end an issue ever. Backtracking real quick, the entire sequence devoted to the USDA and the members just had me in tears. So many buxom ladies with eye injuries and other members including: a cyborg monkey, a kimodo dragon, and a goldfish. Then you have the ending again with Poyo, the most awesome chicken in the history of chickens. The moment Layman does its backstory it was hilarious but when he backtracks and says he lied to us about his backstory it made it even funnier. This is just a chicken, in this universe, that can kill like it was the fucking Terminator. How can you not enjoy that?
Of course you have Rob Guillory making this an absolutely pretty thing to read. He makes all of these insane ideas work by putting so much ideas into each panel. I love how he was able to make the unseen adventures of Chu and Colby work and I would love to see more of those stories in the future. He also executes the idea of the USDA and Poyo so well too. I mean there is a goldfish parachuting in right next to Chu.....it's so hilarious to look at. Plus we get the usual 'inside' or background jokes in almost every panel as well. My favorite coming from the beginning with the FDA's CSI man (the Voresoph from the last issue) having a 'Horatio Caine Forensics Fan Club' poster in the background. You could literally look at every panel of this comic and just see a wealth of detail and jokes, you really could.
Yes the story didn't get advanced and yes I'm sure some might think this is just a 'filler' issue to get an arc to five issues. But seriously, this issue shows why I love reading comics so much. You get so many hilarious ideas put into one comic it's staggering just how much is really here. It's a fun, hilarious, and god damn gorgeous issue to read. Everytime I hear that Layman and Guillory has an end point in mind it really does depress me. I know we have a long, long way to get to the end but I don't want to ever think this series will end ever. I have never felt that about anything like that in my life.
