This was a solid end to a solid series. Every character got their chance to shine and most of the developments were wrapped up well enough. Cornell's dialogue was sharp as always; there are 5-6 really great lines in this issue, as there were in pretty much every issue of the series. And Kirk's art defines these characters, making me wish that he did the whole series, even if that caused delays (not that the few guest artists we had over the past year and a half were bad, but they just weren't as fitting).
I had no problem with Pete Wisdom's game-changing twist, as revealed in this issue. I thought it was clever and that it made sense.
The thing that jumps out to the reader of this issue more than anything, though, is that this ended too soon. Yeah, the series ended too soon, but so did this final issue. Seriously, Marvel should have just charged $4 for this. I would have paid a dollar extra even if that meant we only got...FOUR more pages of story. That would have been the difference between this being a GOOD ending and a GREAT one, in my opinion. There was just a little too much for Cornell to wrap up, in 22 pages, in a way that pauses long enough or takes enough time to dwell on storypoints that deserve a LITTLE more before they fade to black.
"Wahwahwah, I wanted more." It all goes go to show how good this series really was. And this final issue obviously left the audience wanting more as well--the mark of a good piece of art.
Still, the only true misstep, in my opinion, was tied to the lack of space for Cornell to let the characters, characterizations, and plot developments BREATHE a bit: Dracula dies too quick, too soon, and too easy. I love Faiza. She's a great character. The way the series was going, of course she should have been the one to kill Dracula. That's a great hero arc. But, really, she kills him so effortlessly that it's ridiculous. This is DRACULA we're talking about here. The one criticism I've heard about Faiza is that she's portrayed as being too perfect, despite her inexperienced, plucky nature. People have called Faiza a "Mary Sue", in other words, and I've always thought, "Well, yeah, but I still like her." But Faiza killing Dracula as easily as she did, in a two-panel fight? Uh-uh. I cry foul. It's the equivalent of Kitty Pryde killing Magneto on her second or third mission, without breaking a sweat. Of course, if Cornell had a few extra pages to play around with, maybe the "fight" between Faiza and Dracula would have had a few twists and turns in it, and then everyone would be happy.
Regardless, I hope this isn't the last time we see any of these characters--Dracula included--as written by Cornell and as drawn by Kirk.
