I checked, and as of right now, I haven’t taken my crazy pills today. Which is strange because for the life of me I can not figure out just what the hell is wrong with this comic. I mean, it’s Ed Brubaker and Bryan Hitch. That should equate to comic gold right? It’ should be like chocolate and peanut butter making a Reese’s Cup baby. But, for some reason, I am just not enjoying this title all that much. Maybe its something subconscious. When Marvel first announced the purpose of this title, I was a little bit bummed. I mean, we had just gotten to know Bucky as Cap, and I was enjoying watching him try to fill the shoes that Steve Rogers left. This is the Captain America comic I wanted to read. With the creative team that was on board, and the prospect of seeing Steve return, I figured that maybe this is worth reading.

After two issues, I am umimpressed. The story feels completely forced. There’s nothing organic about it. The writing feels sloppy, and he seems to be leaping away from different story points to forcefully build tension. The scene with Reed Richards is a perfect example to me. It doesn’t make any sense as there’s 14 things being discussed in the one scene, and Bru writes Reed in a way that I don’t really care for. I get that he’s using this as a device to make readers think, but for me, it’s just a jarring way to read a book. I also can’t stomach the fact that Norman Osborn is the villain in all this. It’s almost like I feel bitter that he’s in here, sullying one of Marvel’s titles with this Dark Reign nonsense. The man has little history (at least that I’m aware of) with Cap, so that makes him uninteresting to me. Obviously, he’s an opportunistic buttwad, and that’s being played here for tension.

On the art front, I find this issue to be a mixed bag. The flashback scenes with Steve are completely amazing. The art is sharp and dynamic and has that typical Hitch epicness that he always seems to add. But a majority of the art in the book is absolutely blah. The flaws in the art seem to be hidden with a thick helping of inking and the pages just don’t look all that good. The darker tone of the book makes it look like a dark mess, and I’m not a fan of it.

So far, this book has been a big disappointment, and while I’m sure everyone will tell me to trust in Bru, my trust is still there, but this has not been an enjoyable ride for me.

Story: 2 - Average

  1. Spot on review.

If anything I would love to see how a Reese’s Cup Baby is born. It’s probably gross…

  2. Agree with you completely. Lackluster dialogue, boring art. Kind of depressing when you think of how good it could be.
