Brian Michael Bendis continues to cause me to rethink my dislike of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe with “Ultimate Fallout” #1. Following the events of the “Death of Spider-Man”, this issue focuses on the impact of Peter’s death  on the people in his life and the people of his city.

Bendis beautifully captures an assortment of emotions such as sorrow, confusion, and rage. Early on I felt Bendis was trying too hard to evoke a cheap emotional response from me. But before long I found myself gripped by and invested in the story. I particularly was moved by the final sequence between Aunt May, Tony Stark, a young girl, and special appearance on the final page. While it may not have clicked for some people, it really worked for me.

I’ve always had mixed feelings about Mark Bagley’s art. When he’s on, he’s very, very good. But other times his art can look rushed or almost appear as if he’s lost interest in his project. In this issue he is definitely on. His characters are beautifully drawn and show a genuine raw emotion that enhances Bendis’ intended tone. His gorgeous full page shot of a church/cathedral is just one of this issue’s artistic highlights. This book looks fantastic and perfectly fits what I feel an Ultimate issue should look like.

Deep down I know this is an Ultimate book which lessens the gravity of the events for me. But that said, it’s so well written and well conceived that it’s hard not to be drawn in. I’m not the biggest Bendis fan but he and Bagley are really clicking and I’m anxious to see what the next issue holds.

Story: 4 - Very Good
Art: 5 - Excellent
