I’m guessing that the recently announced Winter Soldier series is going to replace this book when it comes out, and I for one am gutted. Along with Daredevil, this has to be the best book Marvel is putting out right now. Every page of Samnee’s artwork is exquisite, and this book with it’s WWII setting seems to be the perfect vehicle for showcasing his Milton Caniff influences. Brubaker, too, is so good here, focusing on Bucky, clearly his favourite element of the Captain America mythos. The scenes of young Bucky discovering that the P.O.W. camp he has taken it upon himself to infiltrate is actually something far more sinister deliver an emotional punch to the gut that few comics can muster, all the more moving because we can almost feel Barnes’ shock and anger. This is comic book story and art at it’s absolute best. Enjoy it while it lasts!
