Ed Brubaker is two issues into his post ‘Death of’ arc and he is really impressing me. It has to be hard to think that this title could live up to expectations after, quite possibly, one of the greatest story arcs in comics history. But Brubaker knows how to entertaining the public; even if he is wish washy when it comes to other titles (looking at you Daredevil and Uncanny X-Men).

As much fun it was to read the flashbacks of Bucky’s days as Winter Soldier (a comic I would love to see actually), more of the fun came from him trying to find out who is after his secrets during the Cold War. It’s a nice touch to see that this new Captain America isnt going to be as good natured or more friendly then Rogers; Bucky is going to be hard boiled and eager to punch someone in the face. The only draw back to this issue was that I wanted to see more of Batroc the Leaper (THE LEAPER!!) in here. Other then the amazing fight on the highway (more on that in a second) I didnt feel any charm from the character unlike last issue. I’m sure we’ll get more of it when we get to the next issue, but I wanna see him taunt more in French this time.

The art in here was much better this time around then last issue. The iTrinity said it best on the podcast, although the art is still impressive, some layouts are a bit static and boring at points. Here Ross is at least trying to make the scenes more exciting and inticing to look at. Again that whole scene with Cap and Batroc fighting on the highway, brilliant panel layouts there. It almost felt like you we’re watching a badass Bruce Willis film.

Overall this look into Bucky’s early years have been entertaining to say the least. There is nothing wrong with anything, in fact improvements are felt with in my eyes in terms of the art. But after the shocking ending of ‘Death of’ arc (or #42) I was hoping for more twists and turns this time around. Still it’s as soild as a comic you’ll pick up in today’s LCS.

*Oh and by the way: The last page reveal, is that anyone in Captain America’s or Marvel’s past? I cant tell if this is a new villian or a revamp of an old one. Either way I love the design for him*

  1. No – I have no idea who that was supposed to be, and I am a Marvel reader going back to the early ’80’s (with a big late ’90’s lay-off). Can’t wait for next month, though!
